Meet the Visionary Leader, Fred Schaeffer

In the early 1990s, Fred led the construction team that turned the dream of a pedestrian bridge spanning the Hudson River into the reality that is now Walkway Over the Hudson. Fred has been a fixture in our park ever since its opening in 2009.

I still go up there on my bicycle just about every day,” Fred says. “For 13 years, I opened the gates 20 minutes before sunrise on the weekends so people could enjoy the views I love so much. One of my greatest pleasures has been meeting people from all over the world that come to the Hudson Valley because of the Walkway, showing them my photos and telling them the history of how this place came to be."

"A story that sticks out among thousands, I remember one spring morning—on the first day of spring, the sun rises in line with the Walkway’s railings—and I was out on the bridge taking pictures when four young boys on bikes rode past me, pedaling toward the rising sun. I just looked at that photo the other day and was nearly moved to tears. Four kids, outside in nature, exercising, hanging out with friends, and coming to see the sunrise in this amazing place we built. It reminded me of everything we hoped the Walkway would be when we started this project more than 30 years ago.

From Ideas to Iron: Walkway Over the Hudson's Humble Beginnings

The Walkway Over the Hudson, rising from the Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge's storied past, stands as a modern marvel—a seamless blend of history and innovation. Originally completed in 1889, this engineering feat formed a vital artery for the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad's Maybrook Line. After succumbing to a fire in 1974, it lay dormant until its rebirth in 2009 as the world's longest pedestrian bridge. Managed by the New York State Bridge Authority and part of the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park, it now anchors the Empire State Trail, offering spectacular vistas to over half a million visitors each year, and linking the Hudson Valley and Dutchess Rail Trails.

A Testament to Resolve & Reverence

The Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge, integral to America's rail history, once carried two sets of tracks, upgraded in 1918 with a gauntlet track to support heavier locomotives, a feature removed in 1958. During World War II, the bridge was strategically blackened to evade enemy detection, a precaution maintained into the 1960s. Remarkably, the high-caliber steel used required no paint, a factor that preservationists credit for its enduring strength.

The structure suffered terrible damage in 1974 as a result of a catastrophic fire that was most likely started by a train brake. Yet, from these ashes, the community, alongside generous donors and New York State, resurrected the bridge as the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park in 2009, an enduring testament to collective resolve and historical reverence.
